SOBAR is Way More Than a Protein Bar

It’s the first food ever designed to help slow and reduce alcohol absorption. SOBAR utilizes advanced food technology to help deliver a better drinking experience through a tasty, convenient, and high-protein functional snack.

Science-driven and clinically backed, SOBAR can help you to drinker smarter. Here’s how…

Better weight management

We all know that drinking alcohol can lead to weight gain and some extra body fat. However, what many of us tend to often overlook is that, in addition to the drinks themselves, the foods we eat when drinking can cause even more weight gain!

That’s where SOBAR comes in.

One of the biggest concerns of many drinkers is weight gain. We all know that it seems to be much easier to put on extra pounds than to take them off. Alcohol can exacerbate this. The science on the topic is pretty straightforward. Established factors for weight gain and drinking include:

  • Consuming excess calories from the alcoholic drinks themselves. This includes those from the alcohol itself (7 calories/g) as well as the other drink components (mostly carbs and sugars, sometimes even fat).
  • Consuming excess calories from the food you eat both while and after you drink. It is common to eat salty, high-fat, and high-carb foods when drinking and the calories can really add-up. Also, drinking can alter both the feelings of satiation and hunger which has the potential to cause eating more than you normally would.
  • Metabolic factors which favor burning alcohol calories first and storing excess calories from other sources as fat.
  • Feeling less inhibited and binging, such as adding that extra slice of pizza or two.

Taken from the clinical trial data*, this chart illustrates how eating a SOBAR before drinking can reduce alcohol absorption by up to 2x more per calorie compared to other foods.

A better handle on your buzz

Although you may like the taste of alcoholic drinks and their effects, we all know that having too much alcohol, or drinking it too fast, can be both unpleasant and potentially put you and others at risk.

That’s where SOBAR comes in.

If you are a drinker, you should understand that it is easy to consume more alcohol than you planned to. Since alcohol can be rapidly absorbed into your body and then slowly metabolized once in your bloodstream, you must be careful about managing your buzz and peak blood alcohol level. Reduced inhibition from the effects of the alcohol itself doesn’t help matters any. The science says that these factors should help guide managing your buzz:

  • Watch what you drink in term of alcohol content. Lower alcohol content drinks (beer and wine) tend to be more slowly absorbed than higher content cocktails. Seek lower/no alcohol alternatives as part of your plan.
  • EAT FOOD before and while you drink; this will both slow absorption of the alcohol and promote enhancing its metabolism in the stomach. Food can also promote a feeling of fullness which can reduce additional drinking. Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach!
  • Slow your roll. Pace yourself with the number of drinks you have over time and shoot for no more than 1 per hour. If you are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol, plan accordingly.
  • Set a limit to have no more than a set number of drinks and stick to it.

SOBAR has been specifically designed and tested to help better manage your buzz. Eating a SOBAR before drinking can help to both reduce your peak blood alcohol level as well as prevent the rapid rise in blood alcohol you can experience when drinking on an empty stomach. The effectiveness of eating 210 calories of SOBAR before 2 drinks is shown in the graph below, adapted from the clinical trial data*.

Feel better after drinking

You’ve probably been there at one point. No one likes to wake up to the next day after a night of drinking and feel tired, anxious, and irritable.

That’s where SOBAR comes in.

If you don’t feel well after drinking then it could be due to drinking too much, too quickly, or having a particular sensitivity to alcohol. Common symptoms after drinking too much include tiredness, dehydration, headaches, and even anxiety; these are often lumped together into what is called a “hangover”. The science says that much of this is due to the direct and systemic effects of alcohol and its metabolites (like acetaldehyde) on your body. There is also a strong correlation between the peak level of blood alcohol you achieve when drinking (absolute, and relative to your normal) and how you feel the next day. Here are some factors that can improve your chances of feeling better the day after drinking:

  • Watch what you drink in term of alcohol content. Lower alcohol content drinks (beer and wine) tend to be more slowly absorbed than higher content cocktails. Seek lower/no alcohol alternatives and drink extra water to stay well hydrated.
Don’t rely on after the fact “hangover remedies”; most have not been proven work at all or have limited utility at best.

SOBAR has been specifically designed and tested to help keep your peak blood alcohol level lower, which can help you to feel better after drinking. Eating a SOBAR before drinking can help to both reduce your peak blood alcohol level as well as prevent the rapid rise in blood alcohol you can experience when drinking on an empty stomach. The effectiveness of eating 210 calories of SOBAR before 2 drinks is shown in this graph from the clinical trial data*.

That Martini REALLY went to my head!

*CLINICALLY BACKED: SOBAR wasn’t just handed out at a party to “see if it works” but was evaluated in a randomized clinical trial by a leading third-party research organization. Each of 21 adults was tested 4 separate times to see the effect of eating food on their alcohol absorption and metabolism after consuming 2 standard drinks within 10 minutes. Before their drinks they were given either no food, 210 calories of snack mix, 210 calories of SOBAR, or a much larger meal. Eating the SOBAR, on average, reduced peak blood alcohol levels and absorption by 50% compared to the no food condition and worked 2x as well per calorie compared to either the snack mix or the full meal. If you are feeling nerdy, you can read the peer-reviewed and published scientific paper here: https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/pdf/10.1089/jmf.2019.0228
In the paper, SOBAR is referred to as RAAB

“I experimented with them at length: SOBARs definitely slow the glide-path of intoxication, which helped minimize next-day despair. And, they taste excellent.”

The SOBAR Story

SOBAR was born of necessity and sparked by a festive event when its inventor, Dr. Joe Fisher, went to a wedding. Despite ample medical education, Joe drank too much on an empty stomach and ended up not feeling so good. Afterwards, Joe thought that it would have been awesome to have a small healthy and low-calorie snack that could have taken the edge off those earlier drinks.

After searching, he found that no functional foods had been developed and optimized to help deal with alcohol absorption. After starting his company, Zeno Functional Foods, and a research program, SOBAR was born (after many prototypes!). The final version was then tested in a randomized clinical trial, and it worked so well that a product was launched to benefit all consumers of alcohol.

Dr. Fisher was educated as a medical scientist and received his BS and MS in Chemistry from Stanford University, and then his MD and PhD from the Stanford Medical School. He worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for over 20 years. By starting Zeno, he set his sights on creating unique foods that can improve an individual's well-being and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SOBAR?

The SOBAR is a new and functional protein bar that is the world’s first food specifically designed to improve your experience when drinking. It is made from only safe food ingredients (all are classified by the FDA as GRAS, Generally Regarded As Safe), is not a drug or supplement, is delicious, and has been specifically formulated to be effective at reducing alcohol absorption when eaten prior to or with an alcoholic drink. Although results will vary depending on what and how much you drink, how fast you drink, and how empty your stomach was prior to drinking, eating a SOBAR has been clinically shown to reduce peak blood alcohol levels by up to 2x as much per calorie eaten as compared to some other conventional foods. Your results may vary.

Who created SOBAR?

Dr. Joseph Fisher is the inventor of the SOBAR and founder of Zeno Functional Foods. Trained as a medical scientist (BS / MS in chemistry and MD / PhD from Stanford University), he worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for over 20 years. After leaving pharmaceuticals, he set his sights on creating unique functional foods that can improve a person's well-being and lifestyle. Dr. Fisher is a lifelong foodie and a member of the Institute of Food Technologists.

Does it really work? Has it been clinically tested?

Everyone responds differently to the ingestion of alcohol; how the SOBAR may affect your alcohol absorption can only truly be determined by you. That said, the SOBAR has been extensively tested and validated in a randomized and controlled clinical trial carried out by a highly respected third party clinical research laboratory. The clinical trial results have been published in a well respected peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Journal of Medicinal Food.

What is Alco-HOLD?

Alco-HOLD is a proprietary and patent-pending mix of regular food ingredients that has the ability to help control alcohol absorption by HOLDING it in the stomach for a longer period of time. Although each component of Alco-HOLD has some ability to do this on its own, Dr. Fisher’s discovery was the finding that certain ingredients have a non-obvious additive effect with each other with regard to this function.

How does SOBAR help me prevent weight gain when drinking?

Verified in clinical testing, SOBAR can reduce alcohol absorption up to 2x as much PER CALORIE compared to other foods. Eating a SOBAR allows you to help take the edge off your drink while consuming less calories, is satiating, and can help keep your blood alcohol lower to provide for a better drinking experience. You don’t have to binge on junk food before drinking to reduce alcohol effects, try a SOBAR first.
