The Cocktail Study

To test the effectiveness of the SOBAR we didn't just hand it out at a party and ask people "how it worked for them". Enlisting a world leader in functional food evaluations, INQUIS Clinical Research, a clinical trial was designed and carried out to rigorously evaluate the SOBAR:

  • DESIGN:  a 4-way crossover randomized controlled trial.
  • SUBJECTS: 10 healthy men, 11 healthy women.
  • DRINK:  a "double cocktail" equivalent over 10 minutes.
  • FOODS: No food, a 70g SOBAR, a snack mix, or a full meal.
  • MEASURES: peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC), total alcohol bioavailaibility, BAC timecourse.

Some help for health conscious drinkers.

We really didn't know how the Cocktail Study would pan out, but as you can see from the chart above the SOBAR really performed.

No matter whether we looked at how much the peak BAC was reduced or how much total alcohol made it into the bloodstream (bioavailability as measure by total area under the curve, not shown), the SOBAR had a profound effect that was statistically significant (p<0.01) compared to all the other groups. Looking at all 21 subjects, eating a 70g SOBAR before drinking a two cocktail equivalent reduced peak BAC by over 50% on average; we think that is quite remarkable for a small snack of a little over 200 calories.

The real surprise was how well the SOBAR worked on a per calorie basis, about 2x as well compared to either a typical savory snack mix or a multi-component full meal tested under the same conditions.
